Re: Does fantasy monster overlap bother you?
I wanted to post here my response from RPG.net. I wanted to post my response here since this is my view concerning monster bestiaries and the state of monster creation in the industry.

If the game is part of a compatible gaming system series, I don't want to see already existing monsters. If it is a new system, sure put them in.

Open gaming products that only change a few things and repackage the same creature material, I will not buy it. Even if their brand of the system is slightly different. I just convert the creatures myself. Same with different editions of games. If developers repackage the same creatures with a slightly changed mechanics, I'll just do it myself with the original content. For me, it's just a product for new users, not necessarily former product owning users.
After all, with N number of attributes, a large library of (S) skills, (A)abilities, species (T) talents/features, and (P)powers, (L) levels, developers should be able to come up with some new creatures. I'm not a statistician but I am sure the number of significantly different creatures would be high (thousands) even if removing a 5% to 10% difference between each creature.
Developers might have to think about it a bit, struggle, and test a few things out like they did in the beginning of gaming development many years ago. But developers IMO should develop content, not just repackage it.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for explaining.
